"And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are
not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or
works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from
the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom be glory for ever
and ever. Amen." St. Clement Homily to Corinthians 32nd chapter
Since, therefore, Abraham was a prophet and saw in the Spirit the
day of the Lord's coming, and the dispensation of His suffering, through whom both he
himself
and all who, following the example of his faith, trust in God, should be saved, he
rejoiced exceedingly. The Lord, therefore, was not unknown to Abraham, whose
day he desired to see;(9) nor, again, was the Lord's Father, for he had learned from the
Word of the Lord, and believed Him; wherefore it was accounted to him by
the Lord for righteousness. For faith towards God justifies a man; and therefore he said,
"I will stretch forth my hand to the most high God, who made the heaven
and the earth."(10) All these truths, however, do those holding perverse opinions
endeavour to overthrow, because of one passage, which they certainly do not
understand correctly. Irenaeus Against Heresies Book 4 Chap 5:5
For when Abraham himself was in un-circumcision, he was justified and blessed by reason of the faith which he reposed in God, as the Scripture tells. Moreover, the Scriptures and the facts themselves compel us to admit that He received circumcision for a sign, and not for righteousness. Irenaeus Dialogue with trypho Chap. 23
For Abraham was declared by God to be righteous, not on account of circumcision, but on account of faith. For before he was circumcised the following statement was made regarding him: 'Abraham believed God, and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.' Irenaeus Dialogue with Trypho Chap. 92
